Queenstown- A Playground for Nature Lovers and Adventurers

Queenstown isn’t just a town—it’s an experience. Tucked between dramatic mountain ranges and the crystal-clear waters of Lake Wakatipu, it’s a paradise for anyone who loves the outdoors. Whether you’re into adrenaline-pumping adventure sports or peaceful nature walks, Queenstown delivers in every season.

As someone who’s made this place home, I can say there’s never a shortage of things to do here. One of my absolute favourite things is hiking. The options are endless—from short scenic walks to full-day treks with jaw-dropping views. What I love most is how close nature is. You don’t need to drive hours to find a good trail. Just step outside, and you’re already surrounded by it. Of course if you are into partying, bar hopping and just enjoy socializing in town, you have got tons of option as well. I also have tom say that Queenstown offers a large variety of dining options, so you can easily find a restaurant that suits your taste. Which restaurant is your favourite? Drop a comment below.

Hiking trails

Some of my favourite hiking trails here include:

  • Mount Crichton Loop Track – a scenic forest and waterfall walk not far from town. Takes about 2-3 hours

  • A walk along the river in Frankton – peaceful and perfect for a relaxed stroll.

  • Moonlight Track – for those who love a bit of a challenge and stunning views.

  • Sawpit Gully in Arrowtown – a rewarding loop with varied terrain and mountain views.

  • The river walk in Arrowtown – easy and picturesque, especially in autumn.

  • Moke Lake – serene, quiet, and a great spot for a loop walk or picnic.

Activities

Here are some of my other favourite activities in and around Queenstown:

  • TSS Earnslaw Steamship Cruise to Walter Peak-Scenic lake journey with a farm tour and excellent dining. This is a must do when in QT, the buffet is of great quality

  • Driving up to the Deer Park- here you can visit “Lord of the Rings” scenes, enjoy breathtaking views over Queenstown and take pictures with the animals

  • Exploring Arrowtown- Historic charm, autumn colours, and gold rush history.

  • Day trip to Glenorchy- Quiet lakeside town with breathtaking views. The drive there is one of New Zealand’s most scenic.

  • Visiting Wānaka- Relaxed vibe, great food spots, and another beautiful lake.

  • Swimming in Lake Wakatipu during summer.

  • Outdoor dining and picnics/ BBQ with a view. In New Zealand you find clean, public BBQ areas which anyone is free to use.

Queenstown has something to offer in every season. In summer, the days are long and perfect for hiking, lake swims, and outdoor dining. My partner is from Argentina so we do BBQ’s regularly in our garden and invite friends and family over.

Autumn brings colourful foliage. Winter turns the town into a ski hub. And spring is that sweet spot where you get a bit of everything.

One thing that took me some time to adjust to was celebrating Christmas in the sun. Coming from Germany, I’m used to cold Decembers, cozy markets, mulled wine, and festive lights in the snow. In Queenstown, Christmas means BBQs, beach days, and sunshine. It’s a different kind of magic, but one that’s grown on me over time—even if I still miss the Christmas markets.

Whether you’re visiting or planning to stay longer, Queenstown has a way of pulling you in. The nature, the lifestyle, the community—it’s all here. And for someone like me who finds peace and joy in the outdoors, there’s really no better place to be.
