Glenorchy-A Peaceful Gateway to Nature

At the northern end of Lake Wakatipu, just a 45-minute scenic drive from Queenstown, lies the charming township of Glenorchy. Surrounded by dramatic mountain ranges, native beech forests, and crystal-clear lagoons, when you get to Glenorchy it feels like a step back in time.

If you’re looking for peaceful walks, breathtaking scenery, and a quieter side of New Zealand, Glenorchy should be high on your list.

A Short History of Glenorchy

Glenorchy was established in the 1860s during the Otago gold rush. Early settlers were drawn to the area by farming opportunities, timber, and gold prospecting. The township remained small and remote, which helped preserve its untouched natural beauty.

The name “Glenorchy” comes from Scotland, meaning “valley of the rushing waters”– a fitting description given the rivers and alpine surroundings. Today, Glenorchy is a small rural community with a strong connection to nature and conservation.

Best Walks & Hikes in and Around Glenorchy

Whether you’re after an easy stroll or a full-day hike, Glenorchy offers some of the best walking tracks near Queenstown.

Glenorchy Lagoon Walkway (My Favourite)

This is hands down my favourite day walk in Glenorchy. The Glenorchy Lagoon Walkway is flat, easy, and incredibly peaceful.

You’ll walk through boardwalks and open wetlands with uninterrupted mountain views reflected in the water. It’s common to spot swans swimming across the lagoon, which makes the whole experience feel calm and almost meditative. Perfect for photography, sunset walks, or just slowing down.

Why I love it:

  • Very peaceful
  • Stunning scenery in all weather
  • Great wildlife spotting
  • Suitable for all fitness levels

Routeburn Track (Day Walk Option)

The Routeburn Track is one of New Zealand’s most famous Great Walks, and Glenorchy is one of its main access points. Even if you don’t do the full multi-day hike, the first section makes an incredible day walk, with swing bridges, waterfalls, and alpine views.

Lake Sylvan Track

An easy forest walk leading to Lake Sylvan, this track is ideal if you’re after a short, family-friendly hike. Surrounded by native beech forest, it feels secluded and quiet, perfect for a relaxed half-day trip. I personally love it as it’s such a peaceful walk through the lush forest. If you have a paddleboard you can even bring it and enjoy some time on the lake.

Mt Judah Track

For those wanting panoramic views over Glenorchy and Lake Wakatipu, the Mt Judah Track is a rewarding uphill walk. It’s short but steep, making it ideal if you want big views without committing to a full-day hike.

Glenorchy is not about Adrenaline like Queenstown with it’s many thrilling activities, it is about slowing down, breathing fresh air and reconnecting with nature.
