Queenstown is often called the adventure capital of New Zealand, and while it’s famous for bungy jumps and jet boats, one of the best ways to truly experience its beauty is on foot. Surrounded by dramatic mountains, lakes, and native bush, the region offers some of the best hikes in New Zealand – from short scenic walks to full-day adventures with breathtaking views.
Whether you’re visiting for a few days or lucky enough to live here (like me!), here are my favourite Queenstown hikes and walking tracks that will make you fall in love with this stunning corner of the South Island.
1. Queenstown Hill Walk
Distance: 5 km return | Time: 2–3 hours | Difficulty: Moderate
This is one of the most popular hikes in Queenstown, and for good reason. Starting right from town, the Queenstown Hill Track winds through pine forest and opens up to panoramic views over Lake Wakatipu, The Remarkables, and the town below.
At the top, you’ll find the famous “Basket of Dreams” sculpture, the perfect spot to catch your breath (and take a few photos). It’s a must-do walk for sunrise or sunset.
2. Ben Lomond Track
Distance: 11 km (to summit) | Time: 6–8 hours | Difficulty: Hard
If you’re after a challenge and a 360-degree mountain view, the Ben Lomond Track is unbeatable. This alpine hike starts from the Gondola station and climbs high above Queenstown to the summit at 1,748 metres.
The track rewards you with sweeping views over Lake Wakatipu, the Southern Alps, and even Mt Aspiring on a clear day. Start early, take plenty of snacks, and always check the weather before you go — it can change quickly at the top.
3. Lake Hayes Walkway
Distance: 8 km loop | Time: 2 hours | Difficulty: Easy
This peaceful, easy loop is one of my favourite family-friendly walks near Queenstown. The Lake Hayes Trail circles a beautiful mirror-like lake, surrounded by golden hills and vineyards.
It’s perfect for a relaxing walk, run, or even a picnic. On calm days, the reflections of the mountains on the water are pure magic. Sunset here is stunning — don’t forget your camera!
4. Bob’s Cove Track
Distance: 2 km return | Time: 30–45 minutes | Difficulty: Easy
Looking for a short but beautiful walk? The Bob’s Cove Track is only a 15-minute drive from Queenstown and offers a mix of native bush, turquoise water, and peaceful bays.
Follow the track to the lookout point for incredible lake views. It’s also a great spot for a swim in summer — the water is crystal clear (and freezing!).
5. Mt Crichton Loop Track
Distance: 6 km loop | Time: 1.5–2.5 hours | Difficulty: Moderate
If I had to pick just one favourite walk in Queenstown, this would be it. The Mount Crichton Loop Track has everything I love in a hike — a perfect mix of native forest, waterfalls, history, and views.
The trail takes you through peaceful beech forest, past the beautiful Twelve Mile Creek waterfall, and by the historic Sam Summers Hut, a reminder of the gold-mining days. The track loops back with glimpses of Lake Dispute and Lake Wakatipu along the way.
It’s the ideal length for a half-day walk — not too long, not too short, and incredibly rewarding.
Bonus Tip: Hike Responsibly
No matter which Queenstown walking track you choose, always remember to check the weather forecast, bring water, sunscreen, and a few layers. New Zealand’s weather can surprise you — even in summer!
My Personal Favourite 🌿
Out of all these incredible hikes, my personal favourite is the Mount Crichton Loop Track. I love it for its perfect balance: it’s long enough to feel like a proper hike, but not too exhausting; it takes you through lush native bush, past a waterfall, and offers those classic Queenstown lake views that never get old. It’s the kind of walk that reminds me why I fell in love with New Zealand in the first place.
