From Germany to New Zealand: My Journey to a New Life

If you had told me a decade ago that I would one day call New Zealand home, I probably would have laughed. Growing up in Germany, my life was structured, familiar, and predictable. But sometimes, all it takes is one trip to change everything.

In 2015, after finishing my apprenticeship in Dresden, Germany, I packed my bags and flew across the world for a working holiday in New Zealand. I am glad I already managed to find a job while still in Germany which gave me at least a little bit of security. However, I had no idea what to expect, but from the moment I landed, I felt something different. The landscapes were breathtaking, the people were laid-back, and there was a sense of freedom I had never experienced before. I spent a year exploring the country, enjoying multi day hikes in the mountains, meeting incredible people, and falling in love with the Kiwi way of life. When my visa expired, I returned to Germany, but New Zealand never really left me.

Fast forward to 2019, and I made the leap—I moved back to New Zealand permanently. Now, as a resident, my life here looks quite different from my backpacking days. I’ve swapped hostel dorms for my own place, and whirlwind road trips for a slower, more settled appreciation of this beautiful country.

New Zealand isn’t just about the stunning scenery (though let’s be honest, it’s a huge perk). It’s about the lifestyle—the work-life balance, the friendly “no worries” attitude, the connection to nature, and the sense of community. Of course, moving countries isn’t always easy. There were challenges, from navigating visas to adjusting to cultural differences, but every step was worth it.

Through this blog, I want to share my experiences—the highs, the lows, and everything in between. Whether you’re thinking of moving to New Zealand, planning a working holiday, or just curious about life on this side of the world, I hope my stories give you insight, inspiration, and maybe even the nudge to start your own adventure.

So, welcome to my journey. Let’s explore this Kiwi life together!
