If there is one thing Queenstown never gets wrong, it’s putting on a show. And while this town is famous for adrenaline and hiking trails, the sunsets here deserve just as much attention. After living in Queenstown for years, exploring all the classic spots, I’ve created my personal list of the best places to watch the sunset in Queenstown.
Whether you’re visiting or you’re one of the lucky few who call this place home, these sunset spots will give you postcard-worthy views!
Here are my favourite places to watch the sky turn colorful.
🌅 1. Queenstown Lakefront (Marine Parade & Beachfront)
The Queenstown lakefront is one of the easiest and most popular places to watch the sun go down, and for good reason. With its panoramic views of Lake Wakatipu and the dramatic silhouette of the Remarkables, this spot always delivers an unforgettable Queenstown sunset experience.
Grab an ice cream from Patagonia, sit on the grass, and let the colours unfold. Simple and perfect.
🌄 2. Kelvin Heights Peninsula Track
The Kelvin Heights Peninsula Track is my personal favourite. This peaceful lakeside loop offers insanely beautiful reflections and some of the quietest sunset viewpoints in Queenstown. It’s one of the best places to enjoy a slow evening walk while the sky turns pastel pink and orange.
If you want a calm, hidden gem with stunning nature all around you, this is it.
🏞️ 3. Bob’s Cove Lookout
If you want a short walk with a big reward, head to Bob’s Cove Lookout. The elevated view over the turquoise water mixed with golden-hour light is absolutely magical.
This is easily one of the best hiking sunset spots near Queenstown, especially for photography lovers.
🚠 4. The Skyline Gondola / Ben Lomond Balcony
Take the gondola up and watch the whole town light up as the sun sets behind the mountains. The Skyline Queenstown viewpoint is iconic and one of the most visited Queenstown lookouts.
Even with more people around, the views are unbeatable, especially if you wander slightly away from the main platform to find quieter corners.
🌳 5. Queenstown Gardens Peninsula
Wander along the lakeside trail in the gardens and you’ll find a magical peninsula viewpoint overlooking the lake and mountains. It’s sheltered, calm, and one of my favourite spots after work when I just need nature and quiet.
🌇 6. Panorama Terrace Viewpoint-Queenstown’s Hidden Sunset Gem
Still unknown to most visitors, Panorama Terrace is one of the best hidden sunset spots in Queenstown. Tucked into a quiet residential area high above town, this lookout offers breathtaking elevated views over the lake, Queenstown Bay, and the Remarkables.
It’s peaceful, local, and seriously underrated — the perfect place to enjoy a sunset without crowds.
Final thoughts
From lakeside classics to hidden lookouts and scenic drives, Queenstown offers some of the most unforgettable sunsets in New Zealand. Whether you’re here for adventure, relaxation, or photography, these Queenstown sunset locations guarantee beautiful golden-hour views.
